Batman Bag of the Week!

New week already! Wow. I'm very excited about this week's bag. I'm a big Batman fan and I have not a clue why this didn't happen sooner.

So a little bit about this bag. It's the same size as usual. I changed up the color scheme obviously and decided on cross-stitching for the bat symbol. I debated for a little while on doing it tapestry crochet style, but decided against it last minute. For some odd reason I seem to be favoring cross-stitch lately. Probably because it's relatively new for me and so versatile.

New Fabric Choices and New Writing Goal Reached!

So this is an odd combo of topics, but I'm very excited to share both with you!

Yay! I got some super fun new fabric.

These fabrics will be used for future Crochet Clutch linings. I'm super excited about it! New ones shown are Mario Brothers, Bow ties, TARDIS explosion, and galaxy print. Create your custom order here. Ready to ship clutches will be done and posted to shop soon. Keep an eyes out. Like on FB and Twitter to get updates on new items and coupon codes.

Alright! This is very exciting for me. I've worked on many different stories over the years, but this is the first time I have actually stuck with it. For a lot of you die-hard writers out there, you may understand what I'm talking about or you may not. (my guess is, you get it.)

In the beginning of the year (Feb. something or another) I set out to write my very first novel. I gave myself a goal of 75K words and just reached my goal yesterday. I probably would have hit that mark a month or so ago if it weren't for taking some time to set up my etsy shop.

Here is the kicker, I may have reached my goal, but my novel is far from finished. I still have a few more chapters to wrap up the ending. For those of you who write, endings are hard! Right? Or is that just me?

What's more, when I am finally finished, editing begins! I don't know about others, but I hate editing. Yuck! Oh well, at least there is still a chance I may have it done before the year is up. I guess that depends on how well this ending pours out of me.

Anyways, I thought I would share my super excitement. If you're a writer and you're not already signed up, you should consider Scribophile. Best writing tool I've ever come across.

Thanks for swinging by!
See ya tomorrow for Bag of the Week!

Bag of the Week Lined Clutch Tutorial

Hello all,

I have a crochet tote in the works, but I thought I'd shake things up a bit this week. It's a relatively easy crochet project with a little sewing thrown in the mix. I'd recommend reading all the directions before beginning. I'm terrible about that, myself. That's probably why I've had to wing it a few times with certain patterns. Anyway, moving along. So here's what I'll be making.

I'm going to focus on the basic pattern, so I'll be showing the steps for the blue one.

Things you will need:

1 skein Premier Home cotton yarn Turquoise 140yds
(Any yarn will do, this is just what I like to use for this project. You won't need it all)
Hook size: 6 mm
Square of approximately 10in X 10in 100% cotton fabric
(Again any fabric will do and you will cut it to size later.)
Yarn needle
Scissors
Thread (matching yarn choice or fabric choice)
Sewing needle
Button
Stitch counter (Optional, but they are handy)

Now that you've gathered everything you need, let's get this ball rolling.

Starting off with the crochet portion.
Chain 26
Row 1: sc in second ch from hook and across (25 sc)
Row 2-23: ch 1 turn sc in each sc across
DO NOT FASTEN OFF

For the edging you will begin by turning your work to the side. (#2)
sc in same stitch (#3) and along the edge evenly.

You will be working around 3 sides of the work. (#4)
3 sc in each corner. (#5)

Forth side (this will be the flap): *There should be 3 sc in the corner already* sc in 11 sts across, ch 5, sc in next st, sc in next 11 sts, 2 sc in corner, sl st in top of 3rd sc. (#6)

Now you have the crochet portion finished. Not so hard huh?
Next up, the fabric lining. This has to be sewn on by hand. There will be no visible seam from the lining showing on the outside of the clutch this way. The stitch I use is the blanket stitch. Great tutorial here on blanket stitch. I feel this does the job and gives it a nice look as well. You can use any stitch you're comfortable with though. I double up my thread. Again, whatever you prefer.
So here goes.
First lay fabric over the whole work and cut to size. (#7)                                                                                 Tuck in sides to match up with the top of the third stitch in.                         Outer edge will consist of edging round and the top of the previous row.                    Pin to crochet. You want to try to get it relatively tight, but it can be adjusted while sewing, so it's not absolutely necessary. (see mine's not perfect)

Now that it's all pinned to your crochet work. Blanket stitch along the bottom edge first. This will help hold it firmly in place for the next step. Once that is complete then you can remove pins from the sides and fold work in thirds. This will form the pocket and flap. Make sure it is even on both sides with both fabric and crochet work. You'll stitch side of the fabric pocket first.(As pictured on the right) Should end up looking like the above picture.

Follow suit with the rest of the sides being sure to keep it even. Attach button to match up with button hole and seam up the crochet sides. Once it's washed those wrinkles will smooth right out.
And that's it!
The same basic idea applies for the lining if you decide to switch up the crochet stitching to something a little more decorative. These will be added to my shop soon and can be special ordered to match your favorite bag or theme.
Black - sc with hdc & treble for flap
Blue - all sc
Aqua - Tunisian stitch (Purchase here.)

Turning a Drawing into a Custom Lap Blanket

How to get this                                                                           from this ...

First off, welcome!

This is a custom project I recently finished for an Etsy customer. Members of a family asked if I could create a blanket for someone using their own drawing. Yes! And here's a quick run through of how I made it happen.

First I took the picture provided and used KnitPro to create a graphed version. It's a free version and there are several similar sites and products. Bare in mind this site is very useful and typically works really well. However, there are some occasions where certain pictures just don't turn out right. It's at that point that I have to pop open Excel and the headache ensues. I'm kidding. It's not really that bad, but creating the graph and picture, using the fill tool can be time consuming. And at times frustrating. (I've made a lot of custom patterns this way.)

Stick it in the generator and out pops something like this:
For mine I chose XL (120 X 160) and then I added about 10 or so stitches on each side and the top and bottom to make it larger. (You might have to color in the squares to make them darker or pick and choose which ones to use along the way. Because of shading there are some grey areas, quite literally.)
You then follow along the chart working back and forth like a graphghan. Video Tutorial (She does a great job.) When finished I put a nice red and black border on it to pull it all together.

I use these types of graphs so much. Cross stitch, graphghans, tapestry crochet, filet crochet etc. It's my favorite tool whether I'm building my own in Excel or using KnitPro.

If you'd like something custom made or just curious about it, check out my shop, catch me on Facebook, or comment here.

And there ya go.

Bag of the Week! Harley Quinn

Fun new addition the bag family inspired by Harley Quinn!

First off, hello and welcome to the latest bag of the week post. I've been hearing a lot about people's excitement for the new movie Suicide Squad coming out next year. Gotta say I'm extremely excited for it myself. I've got my fingers crossed that it's going to be amazing. Anyway because of my excitement I decided to base this week's tote on the crazy character so many are excited to see on the big screen.

The usual tweaks to the pattern were applied. Cross stitching for the words, color changing for the diagonal half and half look and finally tapestry crochet for the diamonds on the side panels. *The red in the pictures is a little off because of lighting and I'm sure each screen shows differently. It's RedHeart Cherry Red. In person it's actually a darker red rather than bright.*

I have to say, I'm pretty ecstatic about how the whole project turned out. As always if you have any ideas on a theme or bag you'd like featured let me know. Any support via Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, or Etsy is more than welcome. Share it with someone you think will like it.

Thank you!

I've got a pattern in the works for next week's bag and a little something brand new I'm trying out that I'll post in the mean time. Keep an eye out.

Bag of the Week! Bad Wolf

The Bad Wolf bag.

 Purchase here.

It's taken me a bit longer with this one. The cross stitch lettering is thicker than previous bags and because of that added a considerable amount of time to the overall project. Color changing for the wolf was also time consuming.

Much like the TARDIS bag from a few weeks ago, this one is worked using multiple color changes and cross stitching for the designs. Other than that the pattern stayed the same as previous ones.

The wolf is meant to be more shadow-like and because of that may seem dis-proportioned slightly. It was a fun little twist.

You may have noticed that last week's bag was similarly colored. I loved the color combo of last week's so much that I decided to replicate it with this bag, although the green is a little lighter this time. Also I couldn't see using any other background color than the green. I feel like blue would have clashed even though it fit better with the Doctor Who theme.

I'd appreciate any and all support. Follow on Twitter, Facebook or here. Don't forget to comment! I want to know what you guys think.

Next week's bag is not going to be Doctor Who related. I'm broadening my horizons to a whole new fandom.

My Confusion and Gag Reflex with 2015 Fashion Trends

I'm going to start off by saying that I am in no way a fashion expert. However, I do know that if you're walking down the road and people are tilting their head to the side with scrunched up brows it's probably because you're wearing something weird. That in itself is perfectly fine. I mean that's how we've come so far in the fashion industry is taking risks. What comes after the initial reaction is key though. Smirks, laughs, shakes of the head and even coughs are generally a bad sign. On the flip side, there are few indicators of positive feedback. You might catch a nod and some whispering, but the latter is not always a good thing.

Now to get closer the the point of this post. I was poking around some websites and came across Elle's 2015 Fall Trend Report. Check it out here for a peak at what I'm talking about.

Let's just go over each one and I'll express my confusion towards people's decisions.

First off we have bling. Whenever I hear the word bling, I think of rap videos and Flavor Flav's giant stupid clock obsession, but hey that's just me. In all seriousness, they are referring to oversized, sparkly, gaudy jewelry. Fine, I can handle seeing that. All in all, it's tolerable and not too overbearing.

Shoes! I am in love with shoes. I have a Pinterest board dedicated to my absolute love of high heels. That being said, this next trend makes me gag. It gets worse and worse each time I look at it. Apparently lady loafers are the It shoe for this fall. No! I can not express to you how much I dislike this trend. However! Some of them are not as bad as others.

These are adorable! And they're crochet to boot. Pattern here.
All of these make me queasy. Just no...

Carwash pleats ... I can honestly say I haven't seen one person walking around in a skirt like this. It's quite literally how it sounds. You know those flaps you drive through at the carwash? Imagine that style skirt and there you have it. It sounds silly, but it's not so bad really.

Oh! Another shoe! Stomps ... Ok there really isn't anything special about these. Not much to say about basic, relatively plain, boots. I can get behind a simple trend like that. Consider me in.

The next is difficult to describe. Happy hemlines.
It's basically a pencil skirt that added a little party to it's life.
Yeah, that's what I'm going with. I don't like it though.

Ah ... The next ... another shoe ... furry feet. I'm finding it difficult to find words for how truly cringe worthy this trend is.
I think it speaks for itself ... wow ... I really did not know that was a thing. And what a horrible thing it is.

Cuffs. So now you can have furry feet and wrist/arms! Nope...

Gloves. You know like those fancy elbow length gloves people wear with dresses. Not really new and inspiring, but a trend nonetheless.

The next one made me giggle. Not because it's funny, but because of the title the author went with. "50 Suits of Grey".  And the short paragraph in which you can get the distinct feeling they are so over 50 Shades references, but were forced into it. The trend itself is straight forward, nothing ground breaking there.

Uh ... I expected the high-waisted pants scene to make an appearance. I can't seem to go to any store now without this trend being shoved down my throat. I just got used to skinny jeans! But this is more a problem of body type for me. See I have a big butt and thighs. (Gasp!) This leads to that bubble feature on the lower back that's hard to avoid with a style like this. Not something I'm willing to put up with.

The next is not a trend per se, but it is for the runway. Male models on Women's runways. Cool, that's all I gotta say.

Ha! Short skirts. That is so not new. Not even going to bother talking about how normal that is.

Super long sleeves? This is a little strange. Apparently the trend is to hide your hands in super long, baggy sleeves. The pictures make me laugh. Check it out.

Then there's the opposite, one sleeve items. I prefer that to looking like I'm wearing a giant's clothing.

Oh! OH! OH!! Plaid! Yay plaid! I absolutely love plaid. I used to have plaid sneakers in high school that I wore until they were nothing but holes and cracked rubber. After, I couldn't find another pair so I sadly had to settle for plain ones. I used to wear my dad's old flannel shirts too. The pictures they show aren't very flattering for the plaid look, but I'm still game.

Skinny scarves. I used to wear those too. First time was just to cover up a hickey, but then I grew to like it. I stuck with that one for a bit until I lost the only one I had.

What I fondly refer to as 'hooker boots' are in this season. No argument from me. I recently found a pair at a rummage sale. All black, side zipper, looked like they'd never been worn. Guess how much?? 50 cents! Guess that lady didn't know about the upcoming trend.

Funky tights ... They've been around since the skinny jeans popped up and some of them are cute. Others make me shake my head and mutter, people buy that??

This next one I had to stare at the picture for a moment to really take it all in. Dickie turtlenecks. It sounds like it should be a sweater, but it's not. It's just the neck part. I don't think I understand this one. It's like a scarf, but not. Oh, it's a really small infinity scarf. Stupid, plus it makes your neck look really long.

Victorian styling of just about any article of clothing is a big thing on the runway. This is one of those things that can only be judged by individual pieces rather than the whole as a trend. Most of the things Elle pictures is not flattering in my opinion. However, I am fond of the era and the overall idea of the style. It's all about execution though.

And there we have it. Fall fashion trends according to Elle. I'm very happy that most of the things seen on runways never make it to stores regular people shop at. There have been many times that I have seen runway designs and I've been genuinely scared for future clothes shopping expeditions.

Hope you enjoyed my attempt at discussing fashion. Do you agree or disagree with me?

Sneak Peak!

Hello!

So Wednesdays are designated 'bag of the week' day. You're probably saying, "But Shay, it is Wednesday." This I know. However, I spent the weekend finishing up a custom order project and I'm now slightly behind schedule on this week's bag. I blame it on the four day weekend. I got caught up in fun freedom that I miscalculated the day. It's easy to do.

Unfortunately that means being late on my total reveal. Instead, I thought I would show off a little bit of the design and leave you to guess what the theme is this week. With a clue like that, I bet you'll guess it easily enough.

Today I have to cross-stitch, put it together and slap some straps on her. Drop by tomorrow and see what I got for you this week. I promise next week's will be on time! You want a hint, you say? All I can tell you is that it references a certain crazy someone.

Thanks for stopping in!

Bag of the Week!

Wow! I can't believe it's already been a week! Been pretty busy with different projects. I have some wash cloths coming soon to Etsy and made a few new patterns for future bags of the week. Playing with some finger knitting. That can create some pretty nifty things. I've got some infinity scarves I'll post at some point. Super quick and easy. Time flies when you're having fun, or just way to busy to look at the clock.

This week's bag has a new tweak, aside from the obvious color changes and cross stitching. I realized with my last bag posting the finished product comes out very box looking and the top folds in at some odd angles when not full. Because I am picky about things like that, I started playing around with different solutions to those problems.

More about that later though ... First here it is!

Let's Do This Thing!

Finished product sold here.

Now as you can see the front and back are quite similar to last week's bag, aside from the new phrase. This one has the tops of both sides pulled in to create a tapered look at the top on both ends. What I did was weave in a piece of excess yarn across the top stitch of both side panels then pulled tight (like a drawstring bag) and tied it off. Then I weaved in the tails.

This can be done previous to adding the straps or after. I recommend after so that you can go over the very top with a double-stranded row of single crochets to pull it all together and add strength to where your straps will be attached. This will allow the bag to carry heavier things. (I will be adding this additional row to the previous pattern post later.)

And that, my friends, is that bag of the week! Tune in next week for a new addition to the happy bag family.

I'd appreciate any and all support. Follow on Twitter, Facebook or here. Don't forget to comment! I want to know what you guys think.
